Europe, one in four young is almost illiterate
Turun Sanomat 13.2 2010, Tuomas Muraja
While the European Union is investing heavily in education and training efforts to improve the competitiveness of EU citizens literacy only deteriorates further. Studies show that up to a quarter of Europeans aged 15 and can read onlyvery poorly. Also the divide EU between member countries are very high. While Finland is at the top of the statistics, Greece and other southern European countries are at the bottom. European declining literacy can not be simply explained by the studies of immigrants ever-growing amount of illiteracy because shares are so outrageous. For example, in Bulgaria and Romania, where migrants are few, half of young people are able to read only acceptably. In Greek secondary school nearly 30 per cent is almost illiterate. Model in Finland and Estonia The EU is now trying to improve the situation by taking a model not only for schoolchildren skills measured in the PISA study, Finland, which holds the tip of the head but also in Estonia and Poland, where recent reforms of the educational outcomes have improved dramatically. Estonia and Poland, schools have begun to address the learning difficulties of children growing earlier and the weakest pupils have begun to support a more systematic way. Finnish population, educational attainment is highest in the EU, with 40 percent of Finnish having higher degree. The Union will also invest more and more adults in knowledge, at present, over 30 percent of EU citizens have only a primary school diploma. http://www.planetread.org/
