Que la memoria es obstinada nos lo enseñó hace muchos años Patricio Guzmán: las huellas de la dictadura de Pinochet, aunque ocultas, escondidas e ignoradas, siguen ahí para quien quiera y sepa buscarlas. Sin rencores, y con el ánimo abierto, porque "recordar ayuda a construir el futuro", como dijo el propio Guzmán en la presentación de su última película en el Festival de Cannes, el cineasta chileno ha vuelto a enfrentarse al legado siniestro de Pinochet con una de sus películas más luminosas, posible cima, hasta ahora, de una trayectoria de compromiso político y poético, personal y patriótico, con su memoria y la de todo su país. Patricio Guzmán viaja al norte de Chile, a las áridas tierras del desierto de Atacama, para poner en común dos puntos tan distantes en el espacio como cercanos en su trabajo con la memoria: la astronomía y la búsqueda de los cadáveres de los represaliados por la dictadura de Pinochet. Con sus telescopios gigantes, los astrónomos observan el pasado del cielo, la luz que emitieron unas estrellas que quizás ya ni existan, y a su lado, las madres y esposas de los desaparecidos rascan el suelo, miran lo más próximo, en busca también de la memoria del país y sus familias. Many years ago, Patricio Guzmán showed us just how stubborn memory is. Even though they are covert, hidden and largely ignored, the traces Pinochet's dictatorship left behind are still there to be found for anyone who wishes to find them and knows where to look. While presenting his latest film at the Cannes Film Festival, Guzmán himself explained that, "remembering is a way of helping to build the future." The Chilean filmmaker has once again, with no hard feelings and with an open mind, taken on Pinochet's sinister legacy in one of his most brilliant films, possibly the climax, to date, of the director's long history of personal, patriotic, political and poetic commitment to his own as well as his entire country's memory. Patricio Guzmán travels to northern Chile, to the dry lands of the Atacama Desert, in order to join together two points that are as distant in space as they are closely related in his work on memory: astronomy and the search for the bodies of the victims of Pinochet's dictatorship. With their giant telescopes, astronomers observe the past in the sky, studying the light emitted by stars that may no longer exist. Beside them, the mothers and wives of the disappeared scratch the ground, looking in their immediate vicinity, also in search of their country's and their families' memories.
