The Payne band at their very finest.Sharp arrangement with very snappy playing by the musicians.Billy Scott Coomber takes the vocal.Credit must also go to the Columbia sound engineer who always recorded the band onto disc very well.Payne was a grumpy, temperamental person who could be very difficult to work for.He perhaps would have been better off staying at the BBC for a couple more years than he did,as organising and finding constant employment for a large touring show band, increased his stress levels even further..He more or less retired from bandleading full time in 1938,but did a bit more recording after that.Bad health dogged him in later years. He ended up owning and working in an off license (liquor store) in Kent,One wonders what he did with all his earnings in the 1930s.His hot records are some of the finest music produced by any of the British dance bands, and luckily he left us a large recording legacy from 1925-1940.Ray Noble arranged and composed for the BBC band until his appt at HMV records.A brilliant band....

  • Jack Payne was a perfectionist who demanded the highest standards, evidence of which is demonstrated here.

As to whether he should have stayed at the BBC is a moot point. It gave him freedom to tour and to film "Say it with Music", for which he received the colossal sum of £10,000.

Constant touring must have been demanding. However, he said that he made hay while the sun shined on Jack Payne & his Band.

Retired mid 1937 but reformed in 1938 he permanenly disbanded in 1946.
