I finally got around to trying out my home-made panned time-lapse setup. Quite pleased with the results, see what you think.
This is filmed with a cheap second hand £40 point and shoot Canon Ixus with a slight modification.

The first pan I filmed in a meadow next to the A6 in Duffield, Derbyshire. Opposite Duffield Hall. This is the field that normally has horned cows wandering around in it.

The second pan I filmed at the junction of Friar Gate/Ford Street and Stafford Street in Derby

Learning to create nice looking panned time-lapses looks like another learning curve. Making these takes a long time but I think the result is very cool looking and so much more rewarding than a normal time-lapse.
Both days I used this it was quite windy which is why the trees seem to shiver. I think it would look nicer on a still day.

For my info...
The settings I used for the first pan were
Az Ratio = 2.168, Speed x8
Filmed over an 18 min period
974 frames captured at 1.108 frames per second.
Quality : Normal, Size 1600x1200

  • A few years ago I made a couple of time lapse videos 'Sun rise over London and the Thames' and a test one showing the tide coming in at Hammersmith. The panning one you have made here is superb and I am envious. I must now look into one of these tripod controllers...

    Loved it.

  • @effigymotion Yes I must make some more of these as I've only ever tried it twice, should get out and try again.

  • amazing. i have timelapses. how do u do tht turning the camera thing

  • @superdurge Using a Modified Astronimical tripod controller.

  • Really enjoyed your film. The pan in the meadow has a truly magic feel to it. Loved the sense of time passing.

  • Thanks. I intend to make some more of these Spring/Summer.
