A conclusion that church planter Pastor Aaron Youngren from the Line in Chicago http://thelinechicago.org and myself came up with in regards to what questions should we really be asking artists.

  • When asking these questions to esoteric and artistic peoples, are you asking to those who are Christians or Non-Christians?

Are these questions in regards to witnessing? Questions in a dialogue between artists who are Christians? Or to open a dialogue with artistic minded people who happen to subscribe to a particular belief system/no belief system?

  • @pliggot good question. In my life right now it would generally apply to Christians. I do not know what particular beliefs you have so I am not sure what knowledge of the questions about art that have been asked amongst Christians for the last number of years. They tend to be how can we use our art to better the world, or how can we use art in a more utilitarian Christian sloganeering kind of way. I would rather get away from that type of thinking. Artists should create art. plumbers fit pipe.

You do make a great point that artists should create. In terms of Christianity, it could be said that if we are made in the image of a creator, then our creations should stand as the gifts that were given to us -no matter what they be.

The conflict is just what you hinted at. craftsmen are not expected to fit their pipes in such a way that it becomes some ministerial format.

Artists who are Christians are sometimes (unfairly) expected to platform their art, this need to change.
