Tar Ponds, Sydney, N.S. - Solidification and Stabilization (SS)
Over 100,000 tonnes of cement powder are being mixed insitu with over 700,000 tonnes of hazardous waste contaminated with PAHs, PCBs, dioxin/furans, metals, BTEX, etc. This community has suffered for months from emissions caused by this sloppy, crude method of mixing all of these contaminants in the open air using an excavator bucket. The end result is not even concrete but more like a crumbly soil. This hazardous waste site is located in downtown Sydney and is surrounded by homes, businesses, schools, playgrounds, grocery stores, etc. This project has been dubbed a cleanup by the provincial and federal governments. Unfortunately, nothing is being cleaned up. It will then be hidden under 1 million tonnes of capping materials in an attempt to slow the leaching of these chemicals by keeping moisture from penetrating the SS material. Keeping moisture away could be difficult considering the Tar Ponds is a tidal estuary, located at the bottom of a watershed that empties into Sydney Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean. There is also fractured bedrock below the Tar Ponds. While governments call this a permanent, walk-away solution, a full panel environmental assessment concluded the site may have to be managed forever. We call that a $400 million COVERUP.
You have no clue how much crap is in there.
