Dr. Jeffrey Meyer, Canada Research Chair in Neurochemistry of Depression, CAMH and U of T, talks about how greater levels of a brain protein called monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) may explain why postpartum blues and clinical depression are so common after childbirth. Dr. Meyer is the principal investigator for the study, called Elevated Brain Monoamine Oxidase A Binding in the Early Postpartum Period, published in May 2010 in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
