Bruce Budge is a reformed prisoner who, having turned his life around, is helping young offenders to reintegrate back into their communities through the Lottery-funded Routes Out of Prison (ROOP) project. Bruce was sent to prison for robbing building societies back in the 80s, but these days is known more for his sterling work as a life coach helping prisoners who are nearing the end of their sentence to acquire the life, social and employment skills they need to rejoin society. Splitting his time between Polmont Young Offenders' Institute and working in the Glasgow community, Bruce provides an action plan for short-term prisoners before their release and continues to support them when when they leave. By drawing on his own experiences he has been able to prevent many offenders from becoming stuck in the revolving door back to prison.
BIG's Investing in Communities programme will continue to fund projects through Life Transitions, which has four updated outcomes:
Key outcome: Fewer people with serious mental health or substance misuse problems enter the criminal justice system or experience homelessness
