Rita Reys started her career over six decades ago, and has played with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Griffin, Chico Hamilton, Jimmy Smith, Zoot Sims, Burt Bacharach, Milt Hinton etc. But above all, she herself has proved untill this very day to be one of the best jazz vocalists in the world. In 1960 she officially became Europe's First Lady of Jazz, at the international jazzfestival of Juan Les Pins (France). But her international break through was already a few years earlier, when in New York she recorded an album with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: The Cool Voice of Rita Reys. Since then she performed at all the great jazz stages, like the New Orleans Jazzfestival, New York's Village Vanguard and London's Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. In 1991 the United States Embassy in The Hague honoured her with the American Songbook Award. In 2006 she was the first Dutch jazz artist, after a.o. Tony Bennett and Herbie Hancock, to win the Edison Oeuvre Award. The jury praised her as "with no doubt the greatest jazz singer our country has brought forth".
