The funny thing is, that this platform is over 15 years old with minor improvements of the frame since 93 and this truck still has a higher crash test rating then the then the 07 Chevy Colorado and also has the same Marginal rating in side impacts as the 07 Dakota and 07Frontier. It just goes to show you how well built this little truck is even after 15 years on the same platform.

I rarely see a Tacoma doing hardwork, I just see people showing off in their Double Cab TRD Tacomas while Rangers are often doing the hardwork. Tacoma is a good truck but like any modern Toyota truck it isn´t designed for its main purpose: Work

@8catullus Furthermore, the Rangers' drivetrain in the last 2 generations have really just been parts bin redesigns. IMHO I believe that the Ranger would be insane if it had the new 3.5L V6 or as a top of the range option, the Ecoboost V6 and a crewcab option. Because every other competitor has gone to, and gone past high output V6's, and moved to V8's, Ford has stuck with the same low buck V6's for the last 15 years. Low output, high fuel consumption.

@8catullus It comes down to the fact of reality. Ford knows that if it made any improvements to the Ranger after this last generation, the sales of the Ranger alone would outsell the venerable F-150. And since fullsize pickup trucks have all but taken a suicide jump off a cliff in the last 10 years, Ford sells the midsize truck to those markets since that's the pickup truck that they actually want.
-
Ford has the right replacement, they just don´t want to "hurt" F-150 sales. So they are selling the new Ranger anywhere but North America. Too bad next time I look for a small/mid size pickup truck I´ll have to look somewhere, hope at least Chevy gets the job well done with the next Colorado.

@luisinhoens90 ford needs to just redesign the ranger, like they did in 1998, they did it once why not again? America needs mid sized 6 cylinder trucks, that don't guzzle gas. They should redesign it like Toyota did tier Tacoma's, because then ford could fight on par with Toyota in the truck department and win. go ford!

@luisinhoens90 i meant its not in MY place to discredit the tacoma, but i have to agree- rangers are for work, and are exactly what ford is '' built tough'' tacomas or more of a sport truck- same with the s-10's- believe me my dad has one, it rides good but its much lower than a ranger and has a smoother ride but i hate that its 4 cylinder. (and btw in a non-rude way, i didn't say u are discrediting tacomas i said im not sorry for the misunderstanding)
-
I´m not discrediting Tacomas, if you watch my previous comment you´ll see I wrote Tacomas are good trucks but being honest for what I´ve seen they don´t hold as well as a Ranger while doing hard work. But for performance, 4 wheeling and showing off they´re pretty decent. Everyone have their strong points as well as their cons. Too bad Ford is ditching the Ranger this year. My family has owned Rangers for 15 years (5 in total). Currently a 2001 Supercab 4dr Edge 4x4 4.0 with a 5 spd

@luisinhoens90 amen for a working man the ranger is a better buy ,but it is not in my place to discredit tacomas- they are still OK trucks. its just the fact that they were made in japan, ill stick to american... for now. too bad i have a chevy =(

Why don't they test a 4x4 model that sits a little higher? I think that it might do a little better.

@SteelCity1981 And the Institute also wants you to take into consideration that there is a human reaction to the situation so there is no need to change what works. Sad that Ford is taking the Ranger off the list after 2012. R.I.P. to the best truck out there.

@luisinhoens90 I think thats just in your area. I see ALOT of tacoma's here being used for work, almost just as equal as the ranger.
They really should put side airbags in pickups
