Having hit the pavement at around twenty mph before I can tell you proper gear means a lot. I'd be missing a good chunk of skin from my arm if I hadn't had my leather on.

The pros who don't wear helmets and leathers get away with that after paying their dues during years of riding with the proper safety equipment. If you're still in the learning stages (Read: If you still get tossed on occasion), don't go without the proper equipment.
