Opie has a new friend, a kid who moved to Mayberry from Raleigh. This new friend, Arnold Winkler, is one of the most spoiled, obnoxious brats that you could ever meet.

Opie gets a crash course in "The World According To Arnold Winkler" that doesn't sit well with Andy. The ill-bred Arnold is every parent's nightmare but now he's run into the wrong Sheriff.

I think there's an Arnold Winkler type in every neighborhood and one Arnold Winkler is one too many.

The script for this episode is Andy Griffith at his best. Andy dispenses fatherly wisdom in heaping doses and it just makes so much sense. This is just one aspect of the program that so endeared "The Andy Griffith Show" to its viewers.

There is plenty of great dialogue in this episode. For example, Andy tells Opie he can't have a bigger allowance and has to keep cleaning the garage for the quarter a week he does get. Andy explains that it's a good feeling to be rewarded for work that you've done and that the older Opie gets the bigger that good feeling will be. The following conversation follows:

Andy: "Well, ah you just, you just think about that for awhile."
Opie: "Do I have to?"
Andy: "Don't you wanna think about it?"
Opie: "It makes me kind a sad."

This is really an hilarious episode and wonderful family entertainment. One of the best in my opinion.

I do apologize for the poor video quality. This is how it downloaded; it's just a bad print and the introduction and most of the closing is missing. What a shame.

  • I loved Opie's response at the end when Andy asks him if he thinks Arnold deserves a spanking. He replies, "I don't want to say. After all, he is one of my own kind." Even though Arnold is a spoiled BRAT who deserves to be spanked soundly, Opie won't say anything against him.

  • @Hisgraceforme It's kind of ironic. Andy would have taught Opie the value of loyalty!

  • @hwy61media - you're right of course. One of the most important things displayed in the show was Andy's loyalty to those close to him. Otherwise, why would he have allowed Barney to remain as deputy - he was totally inept. Andy even gave him the credit for the things he himself did. Barney was a funny character for sure, but he was the worst deputy ever.

  • @Hisgraceforme An astute observation. No argument here. Thanks for commenting.

  • You would put your dad in jail for a bike

    3:06 LOL

  • @Wiggitywigg323323232 The spoiled kid would :) Thanks for commenting.

  • @Astraldragon1 Yeah you're right, it was totally the father's fault. Give him everything and yeah this is what happens, but yeah I just think this was the turning point. His father didn't realize what a monster he'd created until he witnessed his attitude. "I want my way and if it means someone else suffering because of it then so be it, father, mother, whoever, doesn't matter to me." So dad finally took his desire from him this time. Whining? Das right soften his rump a little lol.

  • @mcmgator , I agree he was a Pretty selfish kid but it was the father's fault for giving his son what ever he wanted. I'm guessing the father grew up with not much in his life and well working hard and being a success with lot of money can go to your head if your not carefull especially when you spoil your child.

  • when my grandparents were little, they were spanked or whipped, and were sent behind the woodshed, not inside it.

  • @Wiggitywigg323323232 Yeah I think that's what brought dad to his senses finally. "Wow my son would see me in jail to have some bike......and I'm feeding him, clothing him, giving him a home?" Pretty selfish kid.

  • @Ranger337 Yeah, we have a whole lotta spoiled kids that never saw the inside of a woodshed.

  • If that crying kid was in the WWE, he'd be a wrestler that gets booed (heel).

  • @airplaneman123 Best father ever. I don't care if he's a fictional character. A lot of people could learn a lesson or 2 from Andy Taylor.

  • Arnold has learned the fine art of abusing someone's love.

He could go far.... Congressman Arnold Winkler, (D) Mayberry.

  • I love this episode, especially today.

    Andy as a Tea Partier.

    Arnold and Opie as Democrats.

    Arnold's Father as Republican.

  • LOL on this old accent sounds like a meeting in the white house :)
