The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - Fire, Top of the Pops 1968

"Fire" is a 1968 song by Arthur Brown, Vincent Crane, Mike Finesilver and Peter Ker. Performed by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, it was released as a single and on the band's debut album, also called The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. The single made #1 in the UK (in August 1968) and Canada. In October, it made #2 in the US Billboard charts and #19 in Australia. It also made number 6 in The Netherlands.

The song is an example of the psychedelic rock of the period, though its lack of guitars distinguished it from many of its contemporaries. The lead instrument in this case was Vincent Crane's Hammond electronic organ, augmented by an orchestral section featuring prominent brass. The singer's opening proclamation of himself as "the god of hellfire" became a lasting epithet.

  • very creepy

  • i had this on a 45 (um, the small record with the big hole kids) when i was 4. me and my older sister used to play it non stop.

this was the heaviest, best thing i ever heard. the thing is, that was like 1974-1975, and KISS was everywhere - on the news, on TV, at the roller rink, on magazine covers, t-shirts.

i always thought this is what kiss was gonna sound like. boy was i disappointed.

this is still one of the most terrifying songs ever. fucking love it

  • I love him.

  • This is what I was watching when I was 12 years old and people wonder why I'm strange.

  • Bruce Dickinson said that he applied a lot of his vocal techniques. Listen to the end of "Run to the Hills" and compare it to Arthur's, specially at the middle of the song when he says "burn,burn.burn........." A real genius!

  • This song was all over the place in1968. Then, arthur and his career went up in flames. You do not even hear the song on the classic or oldies stations. Too bad!

  • Alot of metal bands owe Arthur Brown for having a career. Although the guitar wasn't showcased, his songs were certainly "metal" in their feel and composition. The falsetto is priceless.

  • @71JUSTINCASE Arthur Brown is Metal! Huge influence..

  • The most famous Hammond B3 refrain ever.

  • Best video of this song. Kinda reminds me of Rob Zombie mixed with one of those weird monster race guys from LOTR in Ettenmoors. Wish I could have been that scrawney and on good drugs. The acoustic version is down right scary to watch. Fantasy version is better than reality. At 60 years old, that means this song has been stuck in my head for over 40 years.
