The lyrics amazing but really his voice is god awful, was he trying to take a dump while singing this? Maybe it is because I am not a Tom Waits fan, but the Rod Stewart is exponentially better than this version.

I can't believe the crowd in this, they've just witnessed one of the most beautiful songs every written sung live in front of them, and they just look bored. hopefully it's stunned silence :P

Like almost all of his music, it's brutally honest and beautiful, warts and all. Waits, like single malt, is an aquired taste that get's better with time.

This is one of my favourites because, in a sense, it's about a poets fall from grace - life is absurdly beautiful and this song captures the spirit of it perfectly. And all my hangovers weren't a waste.
