I've been getting some questions on how exactly I'm making the swell/pad sounds, so I thought I'd make a video addressing it.

Basically all I'm showing is that I will record an initial loop of silence. From then on, I can leave the record button on and essentially record without boundaries, and the sound will just loop over itself. I hope that makes sense... It gives me the ability to make a nice pad sound without having any sound cutoffs.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • i still am not quite clear on the process you are doing: wont the recording stop as soon as that span of 'silence' is over?

  • @Otherthings100 Initially, yes. Once you hit the overdub button after you've recorded the silence, it will just start layering.

  • i see you have the dd-7 too,

would you say the dl-4 or the dd-7 is more bang for your buck in a delay/looper pedal?

  • @JakeBeatdown that's a DD-5, it doesn't have a looper. but the DL4 is my favorite looper-combined-with-delay pedal.

  • is there something like an undo function with the looper?

  • Totally off-topic, and I'm sure you've gotten this before, but how long have you been on YouTube that you were able to get "tubescreamer" as your use name?? :D

And yes, great pad feel and loop technique here:) Hopefully I'll have the money to get a DL4 to try it out in the near future:S

  • You have good clean guitar toe, if you get swelling it's probably stepping on those metal buttons that causes it.

  • @tubescreamer yo dude, when i start looping it eventually fades out. i just bought it a week ago. am i missing something?

  • @jamiepiemusic tubescreamer has a few really good tutorials on the swells. the idea is actually pretty simple. just browse around the vids until you find it. (sorry, I don't know the link off hand)

  • *sure

  • @kruges41 no, sadly you can't. I'm there's a mod someone could figure out that would allow you to do that, but honestly I've never found it to be a hindrance. one thing that would work though, is running another dl4 in front of the looping one and using the presets in the loop. because just one is never enough. ;)

  • How do you create the ambient swell sounds? What pedals do you have on ?

  • @jcnorthrup so you cant have one of the other delay effects set as a preset and then work those through the looper?

  • @abasolo119 the dl4 still has the delay effect available while looping. you can turn it up or down in the mix and change the tempo still. (tap-tempo isn't available while in loop mode though, you need to just change it with the speed knob) but yeah, the delay is still functional. (you also don't have all the other delay effects while in loop mode. i think it's only the analog delay) =]

  • 2:17 - very Stars of the Lid-y.. Beautiful..

  • been trying for days.. cant get it right :(
