This project was recently completed near Gary, IN. As part of a major road widening and bridge replacement project, INDOT engineers encountered a section of ground that had extremely soft soils with low bearing capacity. If traditional earthen fill had been specified, significant differential settlement would have occurred and would have compromised the integrity of the new traffic lanes.

This section of highway is eligible for federal funding by statute. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) strongly recommended the utilization of GeoFoam to reduce the weight of the overburden along this marshy section of compressible soils.

GeoFoam was installed on top of a compacted shredded tire and sand blend. This lighter weight blend was used to cantilever a traditional MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) wall.

Approximately 3800 cubic yards (32 truckloads) of InsulFoam GF EPS19 were installed in less than a week. That is the equivalent volume of over 420 dump trucks of soil fill!!! The use of GeoFoam also decreased the total weight on the soft soil section by over 12 million pounds!!! Talk about reducing your carbon footprint and traffic congestion on the highways.....
