I think the director was actually telling the people to stand to their feet at the beginning but they did not.

@gatetrekie3 agreed, this almost like a Christian "national anthem", a reminder of the Kingdom to come. I guess a lot of people are mean spirited unbelievers - or simply have difficulty standing :)

OK very good interpretation .What i surprice me is at the end of the piece in the "orchestral titti" appeared suckbuts, at present "trombons"which Haendel never put in the Score , but in any case it is OK because it reforce the bass "tessitura" as Bernstein put in his Messiah performance
