First flight of Balsa USA 1/4 scale Cub converted to Army Air Corps L4N Grasshopper. Wingspan 108 inches and weight 20 pounds powered by Saito 1.50 four-cycle engine.
Runway is north-south so fighting a 7mph crosswind made for long takeoff rolls and hot landings. Grasshopper flew well with slight aileron trim needed.
Flying field of Western RC Flyers located near Mead, Nebraska approximately 15 miles west of Omaha. Airplane built/flown by Nelson Carpenter. Steady video by Tom Wild and much appreciated assistance with first flight by many of my flying buddies.
Quarter scale airplane modeled after full scale Grasshopper used by Army Air Corps in the Pacific theatre during WWII circa 1943. Currently it is based in Hawaii and flying. Owner is Tony Skinner.
