Baby opossum calling for mom, Animal Advocates, Mary Cummins

I just got this baby opossum in and she is calling for her mom. She is making a sound that sounds like "che" or a little sneeze. Generally after a day they give up calling for mom. If you hear this sound, there is probably an orphaned opossum nearby. This opossum will be released back to the wild when she is able.I am a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Mary, does the mommy opossum make any kind of sound or signal in response to the baby? I was wondering if there's a call a person could learn to mimic, or a way of touching it that would comfort the animal? Thanks!

@TwiPrime Mom makes a loud click sound, kind of like the sound you make when you put your tongue to the roof of your mouth then snap it away.

Hey i just saw some of your videos and they really helped :)

We just saved a baby opossum that we found in our garden.... and we're taking care of him. I would like to know something. Here's the thing: the "Mommy" opossum always passes by a window at my house at night around the same hour every time. If we put the opossum in a box next to this place, would the "Mommy opossum" realize the baby is there and would she take him back with her??

@Alimac1112 It might not be the mommy opossum. If it isn't, it might kill the baby. Opossums will only take their babies back if baby crawls a few feet away. Most other wild mammals will take their babies back even days later but unfortunately not opossums. Thanks.

Instead of releasing it you could feed it to a snake. I'm sure it would benefit the snake more then nature / society with all the trash cans it tip over or the rabies it will one day carry
