"The greatest challenge will will have is how to increase the level of support in a time of diminishing resources," Superintendent William Andrekopoulos told school leaders and a variety of staff members last week.
MPS is facing a $2.2 billion post-employment benefit liability, he said.
"If we do not confront this issue, we will not survive as an organization," he said. "We need to right-size our district and close schools. The leading indicator for closing schools should be consistently poor student performance."
The district may have to outsource some operations as well, he said.
