I'm a hard-core experienced storm chaser that chases the midwestern U.S. each spring to film tornadoes. I live in Arizona. Tornadoes...ALL tornadoes, are associated with strong thunderstorms. Dust Devils are simply vortices of hot air, which rise up to the colder air above us in a rotary fashion. Arizona in the spring and summer has dust devils galore. Sometimes I'll look out over a large cotton field and see 5 or 10 spinning at once. They occur in clear skies, with hot temperatures.

NOT a tornado, it is a "dust devil" - they form in HOT weather with the sinking air, under a cloudless or mostly cloudless sky- the winds are usually <40. Please do not call this a tornado as it will confuse ignorant people.... --- NWS Meteorologist.
