A nice anthem with four solo voices (SSTB). This is Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge under Christopher Robinson. Any additional information about the service from which this was recorded would be appreciated.

Michael Wise (1648-1687)

Isaiah 40:3-9

Prepare ye the way of the Lord,
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be exalted,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low:
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough places shall be made plain.
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together.
And the voice said, Cry.
What shall I cry?
All flesh is grass,
and the goodliness thereof is as the flower that is in the field:
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth:
but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
O Zion, that bringest good tidings,
get thee up into the mountains;
O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings,
lift up thy voice with strength;
and say unto Judah, Behold thy God!

  • That bass is amazing.

  • I think jibberjabber's comment was a compliment, not an insult.

  • @brianway3 He was at St. John's for about 11 years, followed by David Hill and Andrew Nethsingha (who currently holds the post). The current DoM at King's is Stephen Cleobury.

  • Excellent job by St John's, and stunning solo work all around. It's performances like these that make me pause and think: 'King's who?'

  • I may be wrong, but I don't think Christopher Robinson was at St. John's. He is the current Director of Music at Kings College, Cambridge.

  • @TJATJA1982 You sicko.

  • Really Beautiful.

  • @bran4805 I have just written in to St John's (17/12/2010). The Advent service from which this comes was made in 1997, and concludes with some utterly marvellous Gorecki. It was broadcast in the UK on a satellite channel called Artsworld on 25 December 2002. I made a VHS tape of it. Duration 45 mins. I do not have a second copy, but have offered my original to the Choir if they can still use it. If memory serves, the original film migt have been German-made. Douglas Brooks-Davies
