  • is there an exact reason my the fingers have to be absoulutly straight because i had and injury to my middle finger on my left hand and i cant straighten the finger completly

  • John. I get the my practice chanter plastic reeds from a local supplier who deals in things Piping etc. I do not know what brand they are.

If you are in Australia I am sure there must be some suppliers you can ask for a reed to try when you explain the kind you want. If not, try looking for a supplier through the internet.

    Best Regards

    Bill

  • can you reply to my question please?

  • Your fingers do not have to be all absolutely straight. It is recommended that the fingers be quite straight (not stiff) so that the outer and inner pads of the fingers cover the holes properly.

Please go to my website and contact me via the Contact Form and I will be able to send you some attachments and provide a more comprehensive answer.

    Best Wishes

    Bill

  • That lovely old chanter you're using there, Pipe Major...would it happen to be an Alexander?

  • Yes, it is an Alexander with counter sunk holes I bought many years ago when long-span practice chanters were scarce. Although it is not as long as some long-span these days, I have no need to change.

    Best wishes,

    Bill

  • Ah, an old Isle of Wight Alexander pc? Has the look of my old Sinclair pc, but fatter and longer. Good, aged blackwood in those days.

This is surely one of the top ten retreats of all time, and my personal favourite. Hope to be buried to these melancholy notes.

  • to whoever the australian is: I buy reeds from Highland House in queensland. they are very good to deal with. I live in sydney and shipping only takes 2-3 days. hope this helps

  • Ah, I thought so! I recently came into possession of one just like it, and it looks/tunes exactly the same as yours, which makes it quite nice to follow along with your tutorials.

Currently I'm using a Boyd reed in it, which is too quiet for my liking. Your chanters sounds quite loud and stable--may I ask what reed(s) you prefer for that particular chanter?

    Thank you!

    John

  • Thanks !!!
