I'm sort of disturbed at some of the comments who don't seem to understand the premise of the character Archie Bunker.

@Charmolution Well the Meathead was a freeloading, self-righteous, far left numbskull. If Lear was trying to make him out to be the good guy then he failed miserably.

@Charmolution Actually, I really liked his charachter very much. We in this phony society have been programmed to think that any kind of prejudice is wrong and that goes against the very grain of human nature. As an American ,I have the freedom and the right to dislike and be weary of any culture that rubs me wrong or that I think is detrimental to a good society. A lot of what Bunker stated was actually true.. You have to remember that Norman Lear was a Socialist

You talk as if Archie is the culmination of all thing negative, which he isn't. He has his good sides, which anyone can clearly see: He is hard-working, dedicated, and he loves his family. And, like any human being, he has his faults, namely he's ill-tempered and prejudiced.

Archie Bunker was a character created to disparage white middle class christian men. The population at large at the time didn't even realize that their core values and traditional American spirit was being attacked and ridiculed right under their noses.

@slumlord2007 Great observations! Let's also remember that Archie had to quit school to help support his family during the Depression. Despite having limited education, Archie worked his way up to a position of responsibility at his job. When his job abruptly ended, he pulled himself up and created his own job. He paid off his mortgage and allowed himself only simple pleasures: bowling, beer, cigars, the occasional ballgame. The Archie Bunkers of America make the country function.
