Ubuntu now installs ureadhead by itself and that was the main thing to speed up the boot. if you want some more tips to make it a little bit faster then go to http://comp-crazy.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-make-ubuntu-910-boot-like-dream... and follow the directions there.

I tried Ubuntu 10.04 and it worked extremely good and fast until one day I updated it then something went wrong and I couldn't fix it, I'll wait until the next alpha to see if it has changed and if it has then I will upload a video showing off 10.04 but I really would not recommend installing the alphas yet unless you have a test machine.

  • how is everyone changing their splash screens

  • @JayandJenn07 this is the default splash screen. ubuntu has changed it many times like they did again for 10.04. There used to be a program called "start up manager" that could easily change a splash screen for the older ubuntus but no longer works now as they have changed the whole boot and got rid of usplash in favour of plymouth.

  • @acrazyplayer0 you can change the splash screen, and log-in like this... Just right click on you desktop Create Launcher give it any NAME For the command use gksu nautilus /usr/share/images/xsplash click o.k. and your done you now have a short cut... and change the splash image next make another Create Launcher ... Command ... is gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties this will change the Log-in screen theme and background... I know it looks like the menu but it's not...

  • meh, I'm not concerned about boot speed anyway, but it did help. Compiz added 3 seconds to the boot time, so it's not so bad to leave it on. Thanks for the help though.

  • @liekomgl33t, 20 seconds off is pretty good and I think it wont go any faster because of the hard drive speed combined with the processor speed. if you can wait a few months for the next release then the boot will be even faster. I hope i helped.

  • it usually takes about 40-50 seconds to boot, but after applying what you have instructed it now takes about 30 seconds. Compiz is turned off and so are the unneeded services and start up applications.

    Ubuntu 9.10

    1G RAM

    Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270 @1.6oGHz

    134GB Hard drive

    It's a dell mini 10v

  • did it take 30 seconds before? what are your main specs? are you usuing the latest ubuntu? is compiz on? that last one adds about 10-20 seconds if so. write back and ill help you as much as possible.

  • I followed the directions listed and I restarted it like 10 times and it still takes about 30 seconds to boot, how many times did you reboot to see the results?

  • just go to the link in the description and click "how to make ubuntu boot like a dream machine" on the left hand side of the page. then read everything below the video. If you do not know how to open a terminal in which to enter the commands then go to "applications" --> "accesories" --> "terminal"
