It's not the drop that is the bad part, it's the sudden stop at the end.
-
@tanker1408 because when it stops your body would still be falling at dangerous speeds and youd break your neck maybe?
-
What happens when the elevator stops? You'd hit the floor with the same amount of force you would if you fell 1000 stories anyway. Not smart. . .

Cute video. Doesn't quite work that way. Elevators, ( Lifts ) don't drop that fast. One might feel a bit light as the descent begins. but that would be all. Also, the Car would not move that many floors. The cables would be too long and weak. People have to get off and change cars from time to time.
-
@tanker1408 because it can't be done - the building would be too high to withstand the incredibly strong currents at that altitude
-
Hold that thought—I'm in free fall at the moment.
-
I thumbed this down for lack of a "swift" ending.

OK.... so she's a lousy actress. I tried to get her to emote a little bit, but she said this was the best she could do. Feh - see if I ever use HER again!
Why has nobody thought to invent a huge lift (in which many people fit in) only for this purpose? They acually could train astronauts with this. I know there are some companies where you can elase a flight with a plane for this purpose but to be honest I think a giant 10km high lift would be more efficient and cheap or no?

Ya me too. It would be like the Tower of Terror ride at Disney, only instead of 2-3 stories it could be 50 stories. They could line the interior with about 3 feet of foam rubber and allow the people to float inside freely.
Too many liability issues for this to happen. Still would be lots of potential for getting hurt. People would be kicking each other and landing funny. Any type of ride like this where there is a drop, the people are strapped in. So what's the point?

@whonjectr Actually the idea still stands consider that even bungee jumping companies make you sign liability waivers in case their equipment fails. :)
-Build it and they will come.

@ColeFried81 Article in the Feb. 2011 Popular Science - somebody has designed an enclosed roller coaster that gives 8 continuous seconds of free fall. Passengers will be strapped into their seats, but "loosely". It's a start.

@tanker1408 It would not. It would be hell to maintain and would not give nearly as much time as a plane. Not to mention that planes exist while elevates that go high enough to be worth it would have to be invented and built as the tallest building in the world. Someone suggested 50 stories: This would last for roughly 6 seconds(+6 seconds of uncomfortable deceleration). On a plane you can achieve 25seconds (this would take a 6300 ft tall building, spending 25 seconds decelerating)

@yuriy609 Yes, a parabolic flight would be better. But the big advantage to some kind of ride with a short controlled free fall would be the price. Who has $5,000 to spend on a parabolic airplane flight? Not me, let me tell you.
Come on, people! We can invent silly putty and bottle openers with little umbrellas on them - we can build something like this! How about it??
