As part of their study of Samurai and Meiji Japan, 131 7th grade students at the American School in Japan (Tokyo) read the novel Samurai Shortstop by Alan Gratz. In addition to designing informative wikis on Japanese culture of the time period, students were able to converse with Alan Gratz through a class blog. They asked him questions and competed in writing contest where Alan was the judge.

For the grand finale 18 representatives of the 7th grade interviewed Alan live via Skype video chat. Alan was at his home in the North Carolina mountains and the students were in their classroom in Tokyo, Japan. This is the video of that conversation.
