Matt Thompson is an award-winning multimedia producer, writer, director and campaign strategist who specializes in viral videos for progressive causes. He recently won a 2007 Webby People's Voice Award for his "Save the Internet: Independence Day" video, a musical micro-documentary about Net Neutrality that drives citizens to help protect the Internet's level playing field. He currently works as a Campaign Strategist with Free Press, a U.S. media reform organization and principal organizer of SavetheInternet.com, a coalition of groups fighting to protect Net Neutrality and the public interest in America's Internet policy.
Other recent projects include The Best War Ever, a viral micro-documentary for the non-profit Center for Media and Democracy about the propaganda campaign that drove America to defeat in Iraq. And Ocean Voyager, a multimedia series for Mother Jones magazine that helps citizens take action on threats to the world's oceans (in collaboration with Phillip Smith). Born in Vancouver, Matt currently lives with his partner Katie in Montreal and maintains strong ties with Toronto. His passions include media theory, Marshall McLuhan, and the strategic values and communications work of George Lakoff, Michael Adams and Daniel Yankelovich. Someday he hopes to finish his first book, The Sixth Estate, about the rise of solutions-based news.
