this fight was also one of robinsons greatest moment. at the end of the 9th round the ref was going to stop it because of the cut on rays eye, if he did ray would of lost to turpin again. instead the ref gave him 1 more round and he got the victory. notice in the 10th after the 1st k.o. there were only 40 sec left, knowing that another k.o. could expire the round, instead ray held him up on the ropes and unleashed his flurries for a TKO. one of the best of all time.

7:12 for a welterweight, Robinson was pretty hard hitting.

@tull06 Being an athlete is one thing, being a fighter is another. You had fighters constantly fighting people, which makes them tough, Becoming the champ and than picking and choosing your fights for the next 10 years isn't tough, its smarts. An early fighter would win the belt and have to defend it instantly, they wouldn't get to choose who to fight like now days.

@tull06 By standards today? Are you fuckin kidding me? By standards today physical ability has nothing to do with it seeing as fighters get knocked out by the smallest blows. Any fighter post 1977 would be beaten brutally by any fighter throughout the 1920s-1969. They were tougher, they fought more, they were rough and rugged. Now days its all softer heavier gloves, fighters taking a year off, sometimes only fighting once a year...Ali would fight 5 times a year, sometimes 6

@RandomLevitation He was a well publicised drinker and smoker in his spare time, by todays standards fighters back then were no were near the physical condition thats fighters are today.

@tull06 What does being social have to do with being a dedicated athlete? Nobody trains harder than Mayweather.
-
@RandomLevitation A dedicated athlete who was well known for living the lifestyle of a socialite outside the ring?

wish there was footage of his first fight with lamotta robinson is the greatest of all time his two fights with basilio as well are classic slugfests

That Turpin was one tuff SOB
Robinson was at his best at welterweight. Unfortunately, there is very little footage of him at welterweight.
The footage that shows Robinson at his best would be either this or his sixth fight with LaMotta. I personally think he was only a hair past his best in his last fight with LaMotta.

Nobody combined impeccable skill, frightening power, and cold fury the way Sugar Ray did.
