This is a rendition of Jarre's Oxygene played entirely on a cheap Casio toy organ (except percussion and sound effects), just to see if it was possible to get a minimally recognizable result, and to show that you don't need lots of expensive keyboards to have fun playing classic synth stuff. All lines were played by hand with no sequencer and no MIDI, just a multitrack recorder.

I only studied each part briefly before recording, so don't expect note-by-note accuracy. Some parts were just ad-libbed or deliberately changed to sound better with the (very) limited range of available sounds, but you'll get a general idea of arrangements and overall mood.

So that's it, get your $20 keyboard and enjoy!

  • I tried this , i have the same keyboard (old crusty and dusty) but the sounds doesnt sound like at u. You probably edit the keyboard sounds with a audio program. ..

  • @StrictlyBG I sent the SA-35 output to a phaser guitar pedal. I used the Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, but other phasers should produce a similar effect.

  • Most excellent. The sign of a true musician, working with the humblest of tools to create sounds of beauty. {applause}

  • @gridsleep Thank you, but don't forget that the most of "oxygenation" comes from the phaser effect and the minipops drums.

  • Nice, but I want you to play oxygene 3 and oxygene 5 on this. You can easy do that.

  • @keyboardjeff The problem with Oxygenes 3 and 5 is that they require some instruments that could be very hard or tricky to emulate with the SA-35, and the final part of Oxygene 5 needs some kind of sequencer or arpeggiator to sound right.

  • wow dude.. may i marry your music? i just love your tunes! :)

  • Guys do you realize that he is much better than most people on tyros & motif machines??? WTF ??? Respect man !!!

  • Please help! can you explain about the other things? I have a synth and am learning some JMJ pieces but cannot play all the parts at once! How does one go about recording them? What type of recorder is recommended? Do I need a mixer and a laptop as well? How do you get the whizzy bits? Does the phaser run off the mains or batteries? I've run out of sockets, the synth and speakers are plugged in near the TV, DVD etc. I'm wondering how much all these other items will cost!
