  • She is the best Carmen I've ever seen!!! BRAVO!!!

  • I can't beleive this, how the fuck wasn't she 1.000.000 times more famous?!?!?! and we have some other completely untalented Carmens that everyones pay or have paied attention to! WTF!!! LOVE HER VOICE!!!!

  • Wow! That slight but ever so dramatic change in her facial expression in the 1st 10 secs speaks volumes about her talent, independent of her magical voice. What a beauty! And does anyone notice her foot tapping at 0:09 s? Notice how the heel hits the ground right on the downbeats but rises with a sort of rubato haste, just ahead of the tempo of the orchestra. She's basically dancing a rubato and it's so appropriate! Such subtlety is the mark of a born musician! They feel music from head to toe.

  • Its amazing how comfortable she is lying down and sitting while singing the way she did! Wow! Going from Mezzo to Soprano was a verry wise choice!

  • Sexy as hell!

  • I found the Medea interesting for Callas 's performance but can't help wishing that if she had to be filmed why not her Norma, her Forza, or Trovatore, her Tosca, her Lucia all roles I would have much rather heard and seen her in on film than the rather archaic film of Medea and why not recorded live performances? The woman was an incredible presence on stage and fed off the energy of an audience. It is unfathomable that so little of her work was filmed and preserved.

  • @intelegentable OK, I'll stop bugging you after this but, if you haven't checked out Callas's "Callas à Paris" double-album, YOU MUST! It is 1960's Callas-voice, but it showed no signs of slowing down whatsoever! In conclusion, we're agreed, Bumbry was good, cute, and well-suited as Carmen– but after hearing Callas in the role, we know how much better Bizet's opera, musically, could have been better. Callas just trumps all...

  • @intelegentable Actually, I find that even in post-60's voice, her coloratura was still solid. The color of her voice was darker– the chest tones supreme!– but her high notes were often wobbly, cringe-worthy. If you wished she'd done "Carmen" on film, I wish she'd recorded Baroque– Handel would have loved her!– or Bizet's piano & voice, or Italian art songs... I hurt thinking about the many possibilities that would have been easy for Callas!

  • @intelegentable I don't regret Pasolini's "Medea" at all– wasn't Callas such a fine non-singing actress in it? But the "Carmen" movie would've been spectacular. (The idea was explored in a sloppy Zeffirelli movie, "Callas Forever") Let's face it, her powers waned by the '60's, but you're right, her tackling the mezzo- roles were still better than most soprano aria recordings, of this and that time.

  • @Rhopoe I agree Callas was amazing as Carmen what a pity that she did not do the role on stage. What a shame she did not film Carmen instead of the Medea film. Callas could have sung Carmen late in her career and also Dalila and Santuzza and put away all the pyrotechnics of the coloratura, bel canto, days and concentrated on these Mezzo roles and been active and astounding. It's criminal that so little of her Operatic work was preserved on film.Thank God for recordings.
