I'm not sure I understand the ending......did all the players lose? Everyone is dead?

The game works by trying to "beat the clock". The blank star field clips with a countdown in the bottom corner weren't included here due to boring-ness when not playing the game.
If you win the board game portion before the clock runs out, you stop the video. If you can't beat it then you see the entire ending, in which everyone "dies". In true Star Trek fashion, though, no one really "dies", as you're caught in a "temporal loop" that allows you to live and play the game again.
