i was just told my dog has this. she eats 2 cups of diet food a day. i dont get what happend

Dogs which are fed a species appropriate diet that is meat based do NOT generally run into this problem. It is really all about diet. Dry kibble diets are the culprit, with their heavy carbohydrate load - completely inappropriate for the carnivorous canine.

Thanks so much, Dr. Sam. My terrier/heeler mix may be dealing with this (bloodwork comes back tomorrow just before my wonderful vet leaves for Russia for 3 weeks). She has been on antibiotics several times in last 8 months and is finishing a round of Cipro/Baytril -- can those meds be responsible?

We just lost our beloved 12year old Jack Russell,Phoebe, to this awful condition, My huband and I are both medical doctors, and the only symptoms she presented was one bout of vomiting & drinking more water. I was concerned about diabetes and took her into a Veternary Hospital with a Cornell trained vet. Phoebe was in acutet AKA with Acute Pancreatitis. NPO, IV'S, Antibitotics, & surgery, and the love of our life was gone!! She was chasing a dog a day before admit. We are devastated. Pleasehelp

Respond to this video... My dog just got diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Toy Manchester Terrier. I had another one that developed chronic mild pancreatitis after a zinc toxicity incident. He lived with it for 6 years, until he was 15. Hopefully, a change of diet can get Sammy's under control. Thanks for the help. It is great to be able to find out about things like this.

@KayteeLola I am so sorry! It is hard to lose a dog. I am very attached to mine, and it hurts like losing family.
I think my dog died of this today.

Thanks for this - its really helped me to understand why my Clumber Spaniel is sooo poorly.

@Tuffnell1 I hope your Spaniel hangs in there. My own dog had a lipase and amylase through the roof (> 10,000) and pulled through. Every dog is different. Thanks, Dr Sam
