TotalBiscuit takes an inept look at a release that sadly went by relatively unnoticed on the PC, that of Monday Night Combat.

why wasn't this game that successful? It looks great and fun!

Are people really that put off by the skill curve? Man, gamers have been mollycoddled into incompetent players now... Whatever happened to the days of cs1.6 and quake and starcraft when players actually toiled up the ladder and enjoyed the learning process?

Modern games are dumbed down to appeal to larger demographics and keep noobs from leaving.

Cartoony, class-based FPS with multiple gamemodes including "stand near something to get it to the goal", "Kill everyone", etc.

Well, the humor is good, I'll give it that, but the difficulty curve isn't the problem. It's the fact that 99% of players say "OMFG NOOB FUCK YOU WE LOST BECAUSE OF YOU FUCKSHITFACE" if you make even the slightest mistake, much less act like you don't know EVERYTHING about the game off the top of your head.

It scares off new players, regardless of their potential.

Shootmania is the only modern fps with a high skill ceiling. Most other shooters follow the trend of CoD.

LoL has certain things to master but it's not like chess, it's more like checkers. A game like Starcraft is more related to chess.

True, and LoL is easy to get into but you can't deny it still has a pretty bloody high skill ceiling. It's like what they say about chess, easy to learn, impossible to master. And there are still pure and competitive shooters being made as well. Have you seen footage of Shootmania?

1.6 has nothing to do with nerds. In fact, it was quite a social scene and a lot of jocks played it (Joe Rogan played quake competitively and a lot of pro-gamers were athletes).

Games like CoD and LoL are successful because they lower the skill ceiling so it attracts the newer players (which is ~90% of demographic). Lesser skilled players can still kill veterans in CoD. LoL has RPG element to encourage noobs.

Studios don't want competitive games because it scares off that 90% of gamers.

Star Craft is still as complicated and difficult to master as always. Sure there are dumb downed games like Diablo 3 and the COD series but challenges are still available for those who want it.

It's just that now there are games for hardcore and casual gamers. Back in the days of 1.6 only "nerds" played video games. Now it's a universal guy thing. That's not such a bad thing. (For gaming that is, it might be a bad thing for society :P)
