My custom drum chart for Nirvana's cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World, from the Unplugged in New York album. Great song but difficult to chart well due to two factors: 1) drum track was hard to hear, especially bass drum and rides/hats; 2) tempo was all over the place due to the live performance. I had to use anchors at almost every measure to sync the song with the frets. BPM ranged from 114 to 119.
FAQ
Q: Is this Rock Band?
A: No, it's FoFiX, an open source program with an interface that emulates RB/GH and allows you to play custom songs that people have charted.
Q: "Charted?"
A: I use a program called FeedBack Chart Editor to enter in drum notes where I hear them. This program creates a chart file which I convert to MIDI and then import into FoFiX.
Q: Why aren't you playing in the video?
A: Because this video is simply showing the notes I charted based on my analysis of the song. I'm using FoFiX's AI to hit the notes for me.
Q: Drums suck. Why don't you chart the guitar track?
A: Maybe I will. Maybe I won't. I happen to enjoy charting drums. Anyway, most charters out there are doing so exclusively for guitar.
Q: Can you chart [insert song here] for me?
A: No.
Q: Can you give me your chart files?
A: No. But nothing stops you from using these videos as a guide and creating a chart of your own.
Q: Can you teach me how to chart a song?
A: Do you have a good ear for music? Can you typically hear and identify all the layers in a song? That's the toughest part and can't really be taught. Learning the interface is quite easy.
