Tassie Devil In Dire Need of Help: http://DevilArk.com.au

Tasmanian Devils are suffering the fatal effects of the Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). DFTD is a cancer that is transferred to healthy devils as a result of biting when feeding or mating. As of January 2010 the devil population in Tasmania has declined by about 85%. The disease has spread to over 70% of Tasmania. There is no cure. More specifically, there are no funds for finding a cure. The hopes of surival of the species lies with captive management. There is a severe lack of funding for this cause, as Michael Tate explains in this video. Please donate to help save this species from going the way of the Tasmanian Tiger.

This video was created by Usuff Omar who visited the Australian Repitile Park http://AustralianReptilePark.com.au and interviewed Michael Tate, the Education Officer.

FACTS ABOUT THE TASMNIAN DEVIL
The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is the largest carnivorous marsupial left on earth. Some of their relatives from the family of Dasyures, including the Thylacine and marsupial lion are now excint. Up till around 5000 years ago the Tasmanian devil was found throutghout mainland Australia. Now its only found on the island of Tasmania. It is believed the introduction of the dingo drove mainland devil poulations to extinction on the Australian mainland. They were able to survive in Tasmania as the dingo never reached the island.

Tasmanian devils are scavengers with a great sense of smell, feeding upon carrion such as dead wombats, kangaroos, wallabies and possums. The females breed once a year and can produce up to four joeys in late summer. The joey will spend the first six months of its life suckling milk from a teat in the mothers's pouch.
