Oleg Pogudin - Lone's the mist-cloaked road before me lying...

Lyrics - M. Lermontov

Music by E.S. Shashina

One of the last Lermontov's poems written in Pyatigorsk not long before the duel.

Выхожу один я на дорогу;
Сквозь туман кремнистый путь блестит;

И не жаль мне прошлого ничуть;

Чтоб дыша вздымалась тихо грудь;

    Quite a few Romantic poets sooner or later celebrated the idea of voluntary death. Lermontov´s poem turns out so moving also because it seems to proceed to this idea as well, and then suddenly - in its last two stanzas - the rejection of life is either changed, or at least modified by the awareness of natural beauties. And Pogudin´s interpretation? If only the poet could hear it...

    Lermontov's poem is indeed sad; Pogudin singing brings out the feelings of the poem. The combination of Lermontov and Pogudin is stunning.
