The Hollywood film about the life and death of German resistance figure Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg has raised awareness of the failed plot to assassinate Hitler on 20 July 1944. In Germany, even after the war ended many still accused Stauffenberg and his fellow plotters of being traitors to their country. Today, the German military, the Bundeswehr, commemorates the plotters' aims. We look at the Stauffenberg group's failed assassination attempt and how it's viewed in Germany.

  • The true always comes as a hero and one of them the Stauffenberg!Long Live German!Salute!

  • von Bismarck would called what Stauffenberg did an officer HAVING A SPINE! Following orders & using it as an excuse to explain one's actions is easy; but having the will to question authorities, when you see enough evidence that something likely has gone wrong... that's tough. The vast majority of people, regardless who they are, question neither themselves nor authorities. Going with the *flow* is much easier. Stauffenberg's one of the more excetptional ones.

  • In the immediate "post-war" era Stauffenberg was seen as a "traitor" because the Germans still yearned FOR Hitler or someone like him. Unlike their former Italian allies (& El Duce), the Germans didn't *push* Hitler out; he *left* them. Now, most Germans were born 1-3 generations after the 1940s & they have a fuller, clearer view of German history & of world history, both of which say Stauffenberg epitomized a better German than the average German of the 1920s, 30's, and 40's.

  • Great Report. Sauffenberg and his colleagues were true patriots, not the miserly and miserable Wehrmacht 'generals' who followed devious orders and stood by Hitler long after it was obvious that Germany was defeated.

I'm glad that Germany is finding its true heroes and I hope that Germans can be proud of their nation by proclaiming people such as Stauffenberg.
