This sends a horrible message to girls who already have poor self image due to the media, others' opinions, etc. Uglies, meanwhile, sends the message that we are all beautiful in our own ways, and that no one really needs to change themselves to suit a 'perfect' image. In my opinion, this is a much better message for anyone to get. If you really didn't see any kind of plot or character development, then you should either take more time reading or read shallower books, like Twilight.
