Student groups go through and introduce American ads based on a class worksheet. There were a total of 10 questions, which asked students pointed questions about the advertisement they were analyzing. This worksheet helped provide a framework of commonalities shared by Russian and American advertisements. The students filled out two analysis sheets: one for American ads and the other for Russian ads.
The activity was wrapped up with a discussion of the following:
Where there any themes or patterns presented through the American ads?
Would you want to buy from these ads? (why or why not ?)
What similarities did you notice between Russian and American ads?
What differences? (here we stopped to fill out a Venn diagram)
Are there any cultural generalizations we can make based on these ads?
Gulnara, the co-teacher, is the voice that you hear in the background. She helps provide extra support for students by translating specific words, ideas or phrases from Russian into English. She was a very important component in the course because she has a deep understanding of both American and Russian cultures and was a valuable resource in explaining American ads to the students when they were having comprehension problems.
