Readers Theater Kit Helps Tackle Literacy Rate Decline By Bringing Excitement Back to Reading

NEW YORK, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- While the Obama administration has announced it will begin to tackle America's declining literacy and high dropout rates, an innovative reading kit is already helping students at hundreds of middle schools, high schools and libraries nationwide, it was announced here today at the 2009 Book Expo America.

The Readers Theater Performance Kit (Galaxy Press, ISBN 978-1-59212-807-6)--featuring script, sound effects and music for live performances of best-selling author L. Ron Hubbard's short fiction novel The Last Drop--is now in the hands of well over 400 teachers and librarians across the United States, said Galaxy Press President John Goodwin.

"We've introduced this to help reverse the disturbing trend reported in 2008 by the U.S. Census Bureau that found the U.S. ranks only 10th among 19 reporting countries in literacy," Goodwin said.

Video shorts of performances from middle school, high school and college-age students show just how reading can come alive with some creative scripting, sound effects and music, Goodwin added.

The kit uses several of the methods recommended by Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), one of the nation's oldest and largest children and family literacy organizations. "We've based the kit on proven methods that the RIF promotes to reverse a prevailing attitude by youth that reading is boring and no fun," Goodwin said. "It's why the Readers Theater Performance Kit has
been so universally well-received."

Goodwin added that with nearly 6.2 million dropouts in 2007 as reported by scholars at Northeastern University and Chicago's Alternative Schools Network, "more tools like The Last Drop kit need to be offered to school districts to help kids be more involved and excited about reading."
