The 717 is basically a DC-9 - When Boeing took over McD back in the late 1990s, the DC-9 was renamed 717. The DC-9/717 are quite a bit smaller than the 727.

The diffusers help regulate the speed of the air for combustion purposes. When the plane is cruising at .80 mach let's say, It expands the air therefore slowing it down..
