With all due respect, fuck the Sullivan audience! George may very well have waited 46 years for a laugh on this gag - yeah, right! - but the point is, he got it. To put it scientifically, the total value (v) of the humor (h) is not subject to the inadequacy (i) of a given audience (a).
h + a = v
h + a - i = v, anyway

George said in his autobiography 'Ed would stand on stage over to stage right. Out of camera range, but on stage. The entire audience never watched the comic, they watched Sullivan to see if he would laugh. And he never did. Playing comedy to the Sullivan audience was agony'.

The Doors were banned from "The Ed Sullivan Show" forever because Jim Morrison sang, "Girl, we couldn't get much higher." But 9 months earlier, George Carlin was invited back after saying, "Mexican high." The difference? The Doors were seen to be advocating marijuana use, while Carlin was making it look like pot smokers were stupid.
Except that's not what George intended at all. But George did show that, if you can't laugh at your own people, don't get upset when others do.

"This is a Canadian low which is not to be confused with a Mexican high." Best line. Weathermen should start saying this kind of stuff

On George Carlin's record album, George does the hippy dippy weatherman and part of that routine is when "Al Sleet" looks at the radar. "Hey, the radar's picking up "Sing Along with Mitch. Go get 'em, Mitch, baby, alright. Give me your answer, do. I'm half crazy, UH, UH, UH, UH, UH, UH." To which I can only add: WHAT A DAY!
