I am so delighted to be able to show you a peek of what this wonderful movie is going to look like when we finally have the chance to see it restored to its former glory. Windjammer fans have waited for this day to come for a long time now.

Here is a little of the history:

Since summer 2009, David Strohmaier, of "Cinerama Adventure" fame and John Sittig of Pacific Theatre in Los Angeles have spent considerable time to find the best elements of the classic CineMiracle semi-documentary and feature film "Windjammer" to be able to re-release it on DVD, Blu-ray and perhaps even in special showings at theaters, museums and other venues.

"Windjammer", a travelogue about the voyage of the Norwegian school ship "Christian Radich". Filmed in CineMiracle and produced by legendary Louis de Rochemont, the film - largely unseen since it's original release - is now being prepared the first time to home theatre screens and cinemas in a digital version. At this early stage, however, no DVD distributor has been set for there is no street date for the release but hopefully sometime in late 2010.

"Windjammer" was a major success during its release and was seen by millions of people all over the world. The film is vividly remembered by many who saw it, and a few of them have had the pleasure to see it projected recently in specialized cinemas during widescreen film festivals. To this day, you can still find "Windjammer" references in hotels and bars across the globe.

  • After the restoration, do you know if they plan to actually show in Cinerama? I live near the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood and have seen both This is Cinerama and How The West Was Won in their original three panel format.

  • @handlebear I sure do hope that they show the restored version at the Cinerama Dome. I live in Los Angeles too and would love to see it on the big screen. I have not heard that the dvd has been released yet. It was suppose to have been released in 2011.

  • Has there been a release of the restored movie on DVD yet? I agree with all the favorable comments made here about this beautiful and haunting film and music. I would be interested in purchasing both a cd and dvd when they become available.

  • @jbhaddocknc I will post an update on the release of the restored version on DVD as soon as I have some information. Stay tuned in!

  • "WINDJAMMER" and "THIS IS CINERAMA" are both planned to be released at the end of 2011 on DVD and Blu-ray. At least for "WINDJAMMER" it will be released in Smile-Box format. My sources said that the version shown recently in the cinemas was close to the Blu-ray but wasn't finalized. It will come with Ouverture, Intermission -music. I don't know yet wich sound format it will feature.

It's not clear if WINDJAMMER and THIS IS CINERAMA will be relaesed as a double package or seperately.

  • @Starglance Thank you for the update. I can't wait to see the restored version of this movie that I have loved for years.

  • My father took me to see it -- twice it was so good -- when I was a little kid. I got the record that day and I'm still playing it. And singing the songs. HURRY, please, with the release!

  • There's a 1937 movie called "Windjammer" on DVD, but it has nothing to do with this one. This version still has not been released.

  • I was most interested in the possibility of getting a cd for my blind brother, as a Christmas present. The dvd will be for me, so time is not an issue in that case. I will try to get a cd made from my old 331/3 if there are no plans on releasing a commercial version. Thanks for the info.

  • Thanks! I've been watching for this movie and soundtrack to return for SOOOOOO long. I still have the Vinyl 78 Soundtrack - Can't wait to get the Blue Ray at the end of 2011 - that's really close now!

  • I am SO delighted to see this! I was named after Kari in the movie and can't wait for the DVD. Thank you
