@billyguns2 I agree with you that this is a very good performance, also as the interpretations of Rosenthal. Rubinsteins is played just on the urtext-ausgabe and very correct and clear played but without any performance like the rachmaninoff's. To play Chopin is not to play like a computer-piano. It's means to understand the music and give back, what the composer wants to say to us. Most pianists did it in a very slowly way, others do it in the right tempo others with ornamentics. All is good
One of the best performances I've heard of this enchanting piece, right up there wtih Rosenthal and Rubinstein. Many great pianists go astray with this simple piece, including the great Rachmaninoff; I can't even listen to Rachmaninoff's hopelessly mannered and wrong-headed version.
Even with the sounds of the old LP this was so far the best interpretation of this magnificant piece of music I found here. I really love the way he plays this nocturne.
One of his better performances. His Polydor 78's can be very good. But his LP's... something happened to him in later life, I know not what, but whatever it was, it was not good for his playing. Witness his B flat Polonaise here on youtube. This Nocturne is, however, delightful... wisely straightforward, clear and melodic.
