local man said he did the responsible thing by setting out his recyclables, but someone stole the bin and the items inside.
Wyandotte County started its curbside recycling program on Monday.
"I've been working with the Unified Government to try to get the word out and distribute some bins," resident Bob Evans told KMBC's Dan Weinbaum.
Evans said he put out his recyclables on Sunday evening.
"Within 30 minutes, my bin and 60 aluminum cans had disappeared from my front yard," Evans said.
It's estimated that those 60 aluminum cans were worth about $2.80 at a scrap yard dealer, which is less than the cost of the green recycling bin.
"I would hate to think adults were so desperate to try to steal aluminum cans for them to get by on, but you just never know," Evans said.
"It was inevitable to happen, and we'll make arrangements to get another bin. We knew you'd run into some of that," said Kirk Suther with Wyandotte County Public Works.
Thefts of scrap metal have been on the rise for several years.
