A better version than in my old video.

Here's how this glitch works, in the geekiest terms possible:

There are three ways of dying in SMB. The first way is to get touched by an enemy. The second way, which is almost identical to the first, happens when the time runs out. The only difference is that a different message displays at the end.

The third way involves falling off of the bottom of the screen. This type of death is completely different from the rest. In the first two ways, everything stops except mario. Then, mario proceeds to play the death animation. But when you fall off of the screen, mario keeps on falling. He can still get killed in the other two ways. All that happens is that the death sound plays, and after a few seconds the game counts you as dead.

This means that if you fall off the screen and get hit by an item, the following will happen:

1.The screen stops scrolling
2.The death sound plays
3.Mario gets hit by a hammer
4.Death type 1 initiates
5.The game continues on as if mario has only been hit by the hammer, except for the fact that he is far off the bottom of the screen. Only one life is lost.

People too deaf to not hear the sound play twice in the original video will hear it here.

  • When Mario falls down a hole, the data indicating Mario's position doesn't go away, only his sprite disappears. Thus, the Mario data continues "falling" from the top of the screen in an endless loop. The way he "dies twice" involves the hammer collision data, which doesn't check to see if the sprite is actually there before making contact. This can be seen sometimes when trying this glitch, as you'll see the hammer that touched the Mario data "shift" in another direction.

  • I should also note that in order to see the hammer shift, you have to pause and unpause the game repeatedly after you get killed from enemy collision. The game is programmed to go to the lives display screen only after the death music has finished playing, but if you delay the death music long enough (about 5 seconds) everything frozen on the screen will start moving again.

  • I've recently found this glitch a few minutes ago while playing Super Mario Bros. on the 3DS.

  • did you know if your little mario, and you hit an item block with a mushroom and die right after, the mushroom still comes out?
