Performance of Debussy's "Pagodes" from Estampes in a master class with Emanuel Ax at Boston University Tanglewood Institute, 2007. Sorry the performance cuts off.. the memory card filled up so we lost the last minute. The rest of the class is in parts 2-5.
'Debussy and the pedal' is a bit of an old chestnut. It makes the difference between images of lilies, running water, perfumes and light etc with hard lines like drums, gamalans, bells, splashes. The dialogue between the two can almost be reduced to the pedal usage, so to pedal Debussy badly is to play it badly. However, this an image so the pedaling should be generous.
It did sound rushed, but this piece always does. Maybe I should learn it myself and be the first to do it right!

i don´t like too much Ax , but a good thing is he allows the student to play some complete sections of the pieces without interrumpting .

Esa es la falta de clase de algunos patanes. por mas títulos, etc. que tengan, muchos estadounidenses son así.

It's the Tanglewood Institute in Boston, an amazing summer program for highschool music students. Emmanuel Ax didn't give any masterclasses there last year though.

Decent playing, but you hardly need Emanuel Ax to tell you your pedaling is sloppy...
