I agree this is a seriously cool and unique design, but the fact is that modern dumpers commonly handle much higher throughput. Many re designed for 45 second or less cycle time, and with today's 100+ ton coal cars, this equates to something on the order of 8-9000 tons per hour.
Those aren't as funky a motion as this one is, though

Side dumpers are very common, this is not your average side dumper.
Give me a link to view another rotary dumper like this in use anywhere. I've seen dozens in use in the flesh, this puppy is unique.

At :36 you can see that the side rails of the cars are wood.

Yeah, they sure are and at least 2" thick with 4 x 4 bolted bracing up the side. These were replaced and renewed easily as they wore down. This was not possible with steel nor is it today without weakening the "box".
It is of course a fact that modern dump cars do have a far higher cubic capacity and are designed more for purpose than the old type wood gondolas. Yet this device was capable of accepting a wide range of cars as opposed to modern usage which depends on broad similarity of the cars.
