From 2002 to 2004, I handled special PR projects for Peavey Electronics. This was an amazing gig as it allowed me to work with some of the most well-known musicians in the world, from Edward Van Halen to, here you will see, Joe Satriani. This is part 1 to a multi-part documentary of footage I captured of Joe's two press conferences I assisted Peavey in arranging at the 2004 NAMM Expo in Anaheim. This is an up-close and personal performance and question and answer session with this legendary guitarist as he introduces his JSX amp to the world. Enjoy.

  • how much editing has this gone through?

  • None - no audio or video editing. Just a simple point-and-shoot production. What you hear is Joe's sound coming right out of the amp.

  • i think a shitty phone cam is the only way that satriani can be made to sound bad

  • Was he using pedals etc for his distortion in this or was he using the ultra/crunch on JSX, because he never used ultra etc in his recent career..?

  • @SILASbanduk

Not really : the JSX is derived from the Triple X (this is why it is called the JS....X ;, quite obvious,no ? ;-), not from the 5150/6505. That being said, i agree with your analysis, you can get high gain settings with Marshall's, but you have to change power tubes, speakers, and add an OD in front of the amp , to have more gain. But then, it's not really "Marshall" anymore.

  • 1:52 Joe is so amazed at the sound that he says "WOW!"

  • @partyboy93 he had better tone when he played on Marshall, in my opinion

  • Yeah, it's The crush of love!!

You can get it from the

    Joe Satriani: An Anthology album

Or the Strange beautiful music i believe

  • I tried the Saturator distortion pedal but I returned it because it sounded just like the JSX OD channels so what's the point. With the above pedals I can get any sound I want at bedroom sound levels. These pedals are so convincing that you would think they were tube driven and they impart a completely different character to the amp sound. It just is a cool way to achieve different sounds with your JSX and not have to buy a half dozen different amps.

  • This is my favorite way to run my amp. I love the clean channel and I run some great distortion pedals in front of it. The on board JSX distortion channel sounds great for Satriani type lead playing. But it does not sound like a Marshall. That is why I achieve my desired sound with pedals on the clean channel. My favorite distortions are a older Keeley modded RAT, Keeley modded TS9, T-Rex Moller, Keeley modded Metal Zone MT-2. These are all high end distortion or OD pedals. VERSATALITY!

  • I have a JSX 100 watt head. I also have the JSX 4x12. I love the head. I like the cab also but I liked the Marshall 1960B cab with it better. They sounded similar except I liked the frequencies that the Marshall cab would feed back at better than the JSX cab.
